Rhys is 7 years old and has attended the centre twice before. Rhys has difficulties understanding where he is in space and in relating to the environment around him. Rhys becomes very frightened when asked to move and he holds himself very rigid to prevent himself falling as he is unable to move his arms to help support himself.
Rhys sat very rigidly in his chair and was not able to even lean forwards to take off his socks for fear of falling and not being able to judge the distance from the chair to the floor. During the therapy block Rhys was seen by an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist. Together they worked with Rhys on loosening his limbs and trunk and giving him the experience of moving under, over and through objects to improve his understanding of the world around him and his relationship to it. This also helped to increase his confidence and decrease his fear.
By the end of the therapy block Rhys's family had a programme of activities to continue at home. Rhys was less fearful and in his supportive chair was able to relax his legs enough to bring them up to take his own socks off with his leg supported.
