Specialists in Cerebral Palsy

About Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales

Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales is a specialist therapy centre and registered charity.  We provide individually tailored therapy for children who have cerebral palsy and other allied neurological conditions.

Our aim is to improve the quality of life for children so that they can participate in everyday life to the best of their ability.

At Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales we focus on the ability and not the disability.

History:

Dr and Mrs Bobath

The Bobath concept was pioneered in the 1950s by Berta Bobath, a physiotherapist, and her husband Dr Karel Bobath, a neurologist. The Bobaths learned from experience and used their knowledge of neuroscience to understand the changes they were seeing.  They adapted their concept as their understanding increased and advances in neuroscience emerged.  This ensured that the Bobath Concept developed into a treatment approach, tailored to each individual patient, which, even after the Bobaths passed away in 1991 is still relevant today.

Founder Parents

In the late 1980’s Paul & Yvonne Lubas and Bob & Glenys Evans, who both have children with cerebral palsy, had been regular attendees at the Bobath Centre in London. In 1990 they saw an increasing need for a Bobath centre to be established in Wales. They approached the London centre with their ideas, after which a steering group was set up to begin work on making the idea a reality. The dream to provide more specialist therapy for every child in Wales who had cerebral palsy became a reality in 1992.

Over the past 25 years we have provided thousands of therapy sessions to the many children who have attended with their families. Ongoing training demands are met to maintain the highest level of therapy provision to the children, as well as developing good working practices, implementing procedures and developing long term strategy plans for the future of the charity.

We are very pleased to be celebrating our 25th anniversary this year together with the families and supporters.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of children in Wales who have cerebral palsy.
